Dr. Anton Cheng

Dr Anton Cheng was born and educated in Hong Kong, graduating MBBS from the Hong Kong University. He did most of his postgraduate surgical training in New Zealand, graduating FRACS and FRCSEd. He then spent the best part of two decades practicing General Surgery in a Wanganui, a provincial city in New Zealand. He embraced minimally invasive surgery early on when MIS took off in the early 1990s.

In 2001, he came to East Malaysia and then Singapore, where he joined Alexandra Hospital as consultant surgeon. He then took on the role as director of Bariatric Surgery.

At the time he took over as director, the Gastric Band was the only procedure on offer. He introduced Sleeve Gastrectomy to Singapore in 2007 and then Roux-on-Y Gastric Bypass in 2008. In 2011 he was instrumental in the establishment of the Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society of Singapore, and served as its founding President.

His present role includes services, mentoring and teaching, both undergraduates and surgical trainees. He is actively involved in ongoing research in metabolic diseases.

He is married to Dr Minnie Pang, a senior pathologist.

He considers himself very lucky to be involved from the beginning in Dr Muffi’s enterprise that is ACMOMS, and looks forward to continue contributing to the advancement of the practice of Obesity and Metabolic Surgery in Asia.
